Exploring Edwards Aquifer at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas.

Beloved and beautiful, Zilker Park boasts 378 acres of city-owned recreational space bordering the south western shores of Town Lake. There’s a lot to do here but the “Splash! Exhibit, housed in the old bathhouse, makes a refreshingly cool stop on a hot day if you don’t want to get your hair wet. Meander through a labyrinthine limestone cavern past aquariums embedded in rock. You'll learn about the inner alchemy of one of the largest artesian water-filled rock formations in the world—home to the crystal clear, 900 foot spring-fed Barton Springs Pool and two endangered species of salamander. Take in a bird's-eye-view of the protected Edwards recharge zone and play in the interactive steampunk science lab while listening to the ambient sounds of a typical Texas thunderstorm. Admission is free.

If you could take just one photo: The Biggest Shade Tree in the Park

Every Saturday, Austin comes to Zilker Park to laugh. Depending on weather, the economy, traffic, and quotidian human drama, between 10 and 30 practitioners of laughter yoga descend upon Zilker each weekend to stretch and play. For one hour every week, laughter is an ice-breaker, laughter is a carnival, laughter is medicine, laughter is the best workout you've ever had. Zilker is situated right on top of Barton Springs, and laughter yoga makes its followers regularly sweat more than they think they're going to just from laughing, so most Saturdays at noon also bear witness to dozens of moist, blissed-out yogis scampering toward the pool. Each exercise in laughter yoga ends with exactly the phrase that comes to mind when many visitors arrive at verdant, peaceful, Zilker, resident and tourist alike: "Very good, very good, YAY!"

Zilker Park

It’s home to ACL, Blues on the Green, and countless festivals, yet some of Zilker Park’s most enchanting days are those where nothing is scheduled. Today was a classic Texas winter day: 70 degrees and sunny... it’s early February. Zilker Park was littered with shirtless boys throwing frisbees, girls laying out in bikinis, one dog per every 2 people, and a flourish of botchy ball, soaring kites, bikes, families, teens and UT students frolicking with the Austin city skyline as backdrop. Just one example of how Austin, a major city with a nightlife and music scene to rival any metropolitan area, is dedicated to providing acres of pure nature in its very heart, minutes away from downtown.

If you could take just one photo: Zilker Park

Austin City Limits Music Festival is an unforgettable experience. Every year thousands of people come from across the country for this three day event to enjoy musical legends that have included Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, and Willie Nelson as well as to be a part of the energy felt throughout Zilker Park. As you look out across the park, you can see dozens of bands spread out across the field as they perform on stage in front of their own personal audiences. Everyone is spread out across the grass with just their coolers as they relax and enjoy themselves as the music washes over them. What better way can you enjoy an afternoon in Austin than with great music and great friends?

Zilker Park

Ever had one of those afternoons where there is absolutely nothing to do? Well, provided there is a little bit of wind, head down to Zilker Park in Central Austin and dare to unleash the string... the string of your kite, that is. Under an impossibly blue sky and billowy clouds, a large clearing provides smooth sailing for kites of all shapes and sizes and allows you (if you are careful!) to avoid all those evil, "kite-eating" trees!
