#7402 Walking the Grounds of the Grandest Estate in Delaware
Winterthur isn't your run-of-the-mill sleepy antiques museum. A grand estate in the du Pont family since 1810, the grounds include 175 period display rooms with 85,000 objects dating from 1640-1840. Highlights include George Washington's Chinese export porcelain, Chippendale furniture and six silver tankards by Paul Revere. Former Winterthur resident H.F. du Pont collected over 100 formal and lavish soup tureens with such images as rabbits and cauliflower in designs ranging from classical to rococo. One thousand acres of rolling hills and gardens surround the museum and gallery buildings, and offer visitors a reflecting pool, azalea and peony gardens and and a sycamore grove.
