Carrying Your Wife in Sonkajärvi, Finland
The story goes that in old Finland, when a man needed a wife he would go to a neighboring village, throw her over his shoulder, and carry home. Long ago, this most politically incorrect tradition turned into a competitive sport held in the small town of Sonkajärvi. A man carries a woman (weighing at least 49 kilograms) across a 253.5 meter obstacle-laden track. The "wife" (pairs don't actually have to be married) just has to hang on. Winners usually finish under one minute. Contestants from all over the world come to compete (including Dennis Rodman in 2005) and the competition's winners have been dominated by Estonians in recent years. Amongst other prizes, the winner receives the equivalent of his wife’s weight in beer.
