Watching Whales Along the Oregon Coast
Each spring, gray whales migrate north, passing so close to the Oregon coast that spectators can see them from shore. A total of 18,000 whales will wave a fin in Oregon's direction from May to June while on their way to their summer home in Alaska's Bering Sea. As in much of the animal kingdom, the pushy teenagers go first, followed by adults and then mothers with babies. The Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay offers a high perch for spotting pods, plus knowledgeable staff who are happy to help you pick a good time of day and location along the coast for sighting spouts.
