#22727 Making a Local Connection in Kerkini, Greece
To those who know, Kerkini is the manmade lake in Greece near the Bulgarian border favored by birders. But local-culture vultures prefer the nearby little village of Kerkini. There the main square’s most prominent building is the Mansion of Kerkini, a family-run hotel restored in 2004 to its original 1918 splendor after 30 years of neglect. Ioannis Reklos, the Kerkini-born owner also manages Oikoperiigitis, a small traditional hotel on the banks of the lake, and the eco-activities Ecological Center Kerkinis-Mpelles. For a culinary treat, hit the Kerkini main square’s Barba Charisis, a little restaurant (no English spoken, open weekends only) where you eat what you’re served. Not to worry; it’s always delish.
