Seeing Red in the Australian Outback
Like a lonely red monster towering over the flat desert landscape, it is not difficult to see why Uluru is so sacred to Aboriginal tribes. A walk around Uluru proves that there is more to the rock than what is seen on a postcard; it is a mass of curves and caverns, inlets with spiritual significance, and discolored channels where water once streamed. Sunrise and sunset are the times to watch Uluru's color change; depending on the season the rock can turn from silvery-grey to orange, sun-bleached yellow to violet, or Uluru's most well-known shade—deep red. Resist the urge pluck a souvenir rock, it's widely believed you'll also be taking home a curse.
