Scrambling Around Ancient Paintings in Tsodilo Hills, Botswana
In the heat of the Kalahari stand four hills sacred to the San people who have lived here for centuries. As you pull up to the modern interpretive center, you pick out your guide for the day. There are both long and short hikes to see the ancient rock paintings. The guides, San descendants, regale you with stories and legends as well as the ingredients and technology of the paintings. Tsodilo has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001, and even though it is not an easy destination, it is well worth the trip.
