Hiking Beneath the Ancients in Redwood National Park, California

Tucked away behind the open grazing of Elk Meadows, the trailhead to Trillium Falls is barely visible in the overgrowth of the off season. It's more than worth the search. Spongy-wet with the spring melt water and last winter’s decaying vegetation, the narrow path bends and flows like an earthen river beneath the immensity of the sequoias—ancient sentries over 300 years old. A crow calls in staccato bursts in the distance, his voice like your footfalls muffled by the dense air; the world is stained green here by filtered sunlight, drenched in the scent of cedar and maple, and unequivocally magnificent.
