Fantasizing Cinematically Under the Acropolis in Athens, Greece
If you’ve ever looked up from Darth Vader heavy-breathing to you, ‘I am your father, Luke,’ and then seen the glowing Acropolis floating beneath a half-moon, then chances are either the peyote is kicking in, or you’re at Thissio Summer Cinema, and it’s Classics Night. The entrance mosaic—the one at the feet of the statue of a naked, cavorting nymph—reads 1935, which isn’t the evening opening time but in fact the grounds of just how classic a cinema this is; it’s been showing them since the Golden Age. So, the bar is at the back, the moon is in the middle, and the fantasy is everywhere. And unless you live in one of the balcony-flats leaning over the courtyard, try to come early if you want your pick of seats.
