Vanishing From the Modern World Via the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan
Part sentry, part testament to 20th-century engineering and all monument; the Mackinac Bridge serves as a gateway to escape. Escape from fluorescent office lighting, escape from ringtones, escape from the 24/7, "not now, yesterday!" world. On one side of this eggshell-white and evergreen colossus stand the conventions and demands of life as one knows it, on the other side? An unspoiled haven: verdant forests, jutting scarps of rose granite, and rivers draining into the inland oceans of Huron and Michigan. The five miles of tensile, steel-rope, concrete, and supporting struts that endure the howling winds and crashing waves of the Straits of Mackinac stand for many things; but for the adventurous traveler the inspiring suspension bridge, above all else, proffers the opportunity to discover one's own oasis from the rest of the world.
