Strolling Beneath the Shade of the French Concession in Shanghai
Tucked smartly amidst skyscrapers and the frenzied streets of Shanghai lies a calm haven known as the Fa Zhu Jie, the French Concession. Here, distinctive French Plane trees line colorful cobblestoned sidewalks, providing heavenly relief from the hazy Shanghai sun and a gentle reminder of flora in a city overpopulated with glass and steel. As you stroll past historic vintage lane houses and narrow alleyways, the streets come alive with bicycle dings that echo in an urban symphony, punctuated by lunchtime conversations drifting through open windows. To your left, a mattress weaver practices his handicraft, on your right, a florist arranges her day’s wares; above, laundry idly breezes as it dries on wide bamboo poles. When you're hungry, grab a fresh steamed bun from a street vendor whose nimble fingers churn them out faster than you could possibly devour. Though you'll eventually return to the hubbub of city life, for now you’re content to amble through this oasis of calm.
