Conquering the Beehive in Acadia National Park, Maine
As you cling to a cliffside iron rung 520 feet in the air, with the treetops far below, you notice the wind feels different when it’s blowing beneath your feet. The Beehive, a rounded mountain of pink granite so named for its shape, sports one of the most strenuous and thrilling hikes in Maine’s Acadia National Park. No technical climbing skills are required, but neither are any missteps allowed. A series of narrow ledges, strategically placed iron rungs, a sense of adventure, and a cattle grate will bring you up the face of the mountain. From the top of the Beehive, you’ll look out over Frenchman Bay, the Porcupine Islands, and Cadillac Mountain. Take in the panorama, then head off on a tamer set of interconnected trails. Or climb back down again—if you dare.
