Tea & Sympathy

Sorting Out Life When It Gets Tricky at Tea & Sympathy in New York City

The floor is uneven, the door squeaky, and you might think this place has been here forever. Laminated table cloths, chintzy tea pots, and mismatched cups are the name of the game. But sympathy is plentiful in this Greenwich Village spot, whether you want it or not. With the whole place seeming just slightly larger than a doll house, you are bound to get close with the next-table neighbor (in all likelihood an Anglophile). If you are after English tea, clotted cream and sconces, you won’t be disappointed—as long as you follow rules posted on the door. They “apply to everyone [...] you will be asked to leave when it gets busy [...] Nothing personal.” Everything else is personal, including Nicky’s advice on what's needed, “when life becomes a bit tricky: […] sympathy, tea and a bicky.” You'll find it all here.
