#22236 Easing Into Twilight in Sossusvlei, Namibia

As the sun dips into the red desert, shadow dragons unfurl, their dorsal outlines hewing to the crisp rising ridges of the dunes. Calderesque in shape—amoebic and pulpy—the shadows glide over wind-blown contours and creep down the dark sides of the sand slopes, swallowing crimsons and accelerating toward twilight’s wide-sky silence. The dunes of the Namib Desert, the oldest in the world, took millions of years to rise to their record heights—some up to 1000 feet. Most laze lost in an unforgiving and impenetrable sand sea, but the few flanking the Sossusvlei clay pan in the Namib Naukluft National Park west of Sesriem in central Namibia, are accessible by road. And unforgettable. Vlei means ‘marsh’ in Afrikaans, but rainwater flows through the shallow Tsauchab River valley only once every five to ten years. The rest of time it belongs to gemsbok, camelthorn trees, and quiet: equipoise to any tumult.
