Reliving a Sad History in Sarajevo's Sniper Alley, Bosnia
It was called Sniper Alley in the early 1990s, infamous for frequent attacks on native Sarajevans trying to go about their daily lives, waiting for UN tanks to escort them across the street. These days it’s a quiet reminder of the horrors that these people experienced. The Holiday Inn shows its scars in the pockmarks caused by shelling from the other side of the street. As trams and cars drive by, the high-rise apartments that served as the sniper’s base are visible. You may fight back the urge to flinch as you look. The Sarajevo War Museum commemorates the trials and spirit of the Bosnian people during the siege of this sad city.
