Hiking in Primeval Sinharaja Rainforest in Sri Lanka
Sinharaja is Sri Lanka’s unique primeval rainforest. The largest surviving tract of Gondwanan jungle in South Asia, this World Heritage Site’s mere 27,000 acres (once 250,000 blanketing the hilly wet zone of the island’s south) harbor the highest concentration of endemic species in a country famous for its endemism. Despite approach roads in terrible disrepair and leeches in bloodthirsty abundance, this haven of breathtaking sylvan beauty should never be bypassed. There’s no vehicular access, but winding paths make walking the forest floor—with a compulsory guide—a bird- or nature-watcher’s wet dream. Park entry is via Kudawa in the north and Deniyaya in the south. Bring water, insect (and leech) repellent and a hat!
