Birding the Shores of Rodeo Lagoon in the Marin Headlands, CA
Early morning. Egrets and great blue herons dot the shores. A juvenile black-crowned night heron's red eyes take in the all of the activity before winging away into a thicket of willows. Surf scoters move in a group, the males' orange and white clown faces standing out amidst the females. Scaups have their own group, dabbling in the shallows on the south side of the lagoon. River otters are seen making their way from Rodeo Lagoon, under the road, and into the marshlands on the other side. Brown pelicans circle in the air, before crashing into the water, surfacing with bulging bills. And this is only a fraction of the wildlife in the area, with no mention of all the migrants that pass through this area in the spring and fall, and ignores the fact that the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory makes its home here.
