#14920 Braving the Desert Heat at an Eerie Ghost Town in Rhyolite, Nevada

With signs marked with "Danger" and "No Enter" and rattlesnake warnings scattered about, the deathly quiet ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada—located in the Bullfrog Hills about 120 miles northwest of Vegas—is sure to spook the hell out of you. Jackrabbits roam the desolate desert expanse, and the most paranoid of visitors wandering the grounds may involuntarily recall horror films set in the middle of nowhere in places exactly like this—where all that's present are rusty Union Pacific train cars, decrepit mining town structures, and the sweat on your brow from 100+ degree heat. The town—which saw an influx in population in the early 1900s when miners and developers settled to find gold—was abandoned soon after. By 1920, Rhyolite became a tourist landmark and a film set. Granted, this spot is out-of-the-way, but if you find yourself passing through Nye County, grab your camera, brave the heat, and explore the town.
