Clinging to a Suspension Bridge in Sausalito, California

The windy walk to Point Bonita Lighthouse could not be more packed with symbolism, drama, and wild romanticism. Along the steep half-mile path to the outcropping of rugged stone on which the lighthouse stands, you gaze down cliffs that plunge to roiling ocean waters, go through a dark tunnel piercing a granite hill, and cling to the railing of a narrow, shuddering suspension bridge that offers a sublime vista of the rocks and ocean below—sublime in the sense of both beauty and terror. The journey is worth every step, and encompasses a microcosm of California’s untamed coastal beauty. As if that weren’t enough, the site offers panoramic views of San Francisco across the bay. If you’re really planning ahead, you can arrange to get married in the lighthouse.

Point Bonita Lighthouse

Take the Sausalito exit onto Conzelman Road west from the 101 - even if it’s the long way around for you. Along this windy road, the Golden Gate Bridge is in arms reach with the sun gleaming from below like sparkling jewels floating on the ocean. The walk down the trail from Point Bonita parking greets you with a calm breeze and a serene quiet, save the crashing of the waves against the rocks below. You’ll happen upon a tunnel, and at the other side your treasure awaits in the mystery and beauty of the Point Bonita Lighthouse - built in 1855, it was the third ever on the West coast. Inquire from the volunteer docents about the lighthouse’s history, take in the peaceful view and at the end of your adventure, head to nearby Sausalito for lunch at The Spinnaker.
