Haggling for Textiles and Handicrafts in Otavalo, Ecuador
The small town of Otavalo, nestled in the Andes mountains, boasts one of the best textile and handicraft markets in the world. Rainbow colored tapestries, knitted hats and scarves, hand-made jewelry, and indigenous instruments are all for sale, and their vendors aren't afraid to let you know it. Bargaining is expected, so practice your "you-can't-honestly-expect-me-to-pay-that-much" face before going or you'll be wheedled into paying twice the cost. After a long day of shopping, watch the buzz of the marketplace from above as you sip a fresh smoothie at the aptly named Buena Vista restaurant.
