Reveling in a Secluded Beach's Serenity in Punta del Diablo, Uruguay

The ride to Punta del Diablo can leave you a sweaty mess, half-delirious from the unrelenting Uruguayan sun. You'll likely wake up when the bus pulls into town on one of three main streets, where the local rush hour consists of a couple of horses and the odd donkey-cart. With the first Atlantic breeze, the pace of city living is swept away before your eyes can even take in the sight of the country's last secluded fishing village. From the windy beaches of the west to a stretch of sand where fishermen haul in tonight's dinner, there's not a bad view to be had. In a town of 400, you can find an even more remote place to soak in the sun and marvel at how you got here: Playa Grande, a beautiful beach just a stroll up the town's coast. Head down a hidden path nestled between windswept sand dunes and find the beach that, even in high season, remains deserted.
