#22409 Getting Dizzy on Montreal's Spiral Staircases in Quebec, Canada
Stroll through the city streets and you'll stumble upon spiral staircase after spiral staircase. An architectural peculiarity of Montreal, the creaky wrought-iron staircases cling to the outside of brightly colored duplexes; in the past, the law dictated that green space be left outside of a building, leaving less square footage on the lot for the building itself. Outdoor stairs, then, were preferred over indoor ones, which would have taken up more precious living space. The tree-lined streets in the Plateau neighborhood are particularly charming; curvy, quirky staircases create unique patterns within a vibrant urban landscape. Who needs a stoop when you've got one of these?
