At first glance the Elephant Orphanage seems like a money-grubbing tourist trap as you are herded to the barn where you can pay to feed a baby elephant a bottle of formula, but then you walk up the hill to see hundreds of elephants grazing all around you. Baby elephants come to play and push you about. The group heads down to the river with you in their midst, thoughts of a cool bath all that’s on their minds. For the next two hours you are entranced, watching as both babies and adults frolic in the river, washing, and escaping from the oppressive afternoon heat.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is what you would expect of a tourist attraction with the usual gimmicks of feed a baby elephant, have your picture taken with a baby elephant but it is still both a charming and heartwarming experience to be that close to such a majestic animal, to follow the elephants as they are lead down to the river and to watch as they truly seem to enjoy the water and each others company. Whether you see this place as just another attraction on your list or not there is no escaping that these animals are deeply cared for by their handlers, take the time to stop and talk with them and you will see for yourself that your small contributions do make a difference in the lives of these animals.
