Sampling Pie in the Sky in Pie Town, New Mexico
Ever in search of the perfect slice, I spied Pie Town on the map, and took U.S. 60 past the first atomic bomb test site and the Very Large Array, to the aromatic Pie-O-Neer Cafe. Kathy Knapp, the flour-dusted proprietress, said, "We're closing in twenty minutes." Two hours of chewing pie—and the fat—later, this proved flexible. No one is in a hurry in Pie Town and we shared a passion for pastries. The Pie-O-Neer is no-frills homey, with a broad smile of a porch, wooden floors, wood stove, and shelves stacked with the eponymous sweets. Sometimes there's live acoustic music to accompany your high desert dessert. Ironic fact: the Pie-O-Neer serves cherry, berry, peach, and apple pie high in the Datil Range, where no fruit grows. Which did I try? Apple. Why? Because with apple pie, you can bake but you cannot hide. Everything has to be right. It was.
