#23286 Escaping the Bustle of Rome in Hidden-Away Piazza Mattei, Italy
Tucked away in a tiny, golden-hued piazza off the old Jewish Ghetto in Rome is the obscure Fontana delle Tartarughe. Let the gentle sound of trickling water wash away the whine of mopeds and the grating of storefronts closing for siesta as the high stucco buildings reflect a warm glow throughout the square. Originally designed by Giocomo della Porta, the fountain depicts four men elegantly helping four turtles into the topmost pool of water (the turtles were Bernini's addition to this public work of art). Take a seat at Bartaruga, a funky, Baroque-infused cafe with outdoor seating, and sip a glass of cool, sparkling prosecco as you admire this hidden-away Roman fountain. Just as a turtle is at home wherever it goes, make this moment one of your own quiet repose.
