Wandering the Deserted Siesta Streets in Lecce, Italy
The residents of Lecce certainly know how to siesta, and a mid-afternoon wander through the back streets of its old town can be a curiously eerie experience. High stone buildings dwarf the narrow laneways as they brood in the afternoon shade. Nothing stirs except the occasional dust pile, nudged into action by a breath of warm wind. Shutters and doors are bolted; stillness hangs in the streets. Lecce, the “Florence-of-the south”, can feel magically, queasily abandoned at times like this—long may it continue to be neglected.
