Nimis — Karen Dion Like

Discovering an Empty Nation in Skåne, Sweden

Like an explorer you sit alone at your discovered oasis. One that doesn’t technically exist. There was no official route to get to Nimis, for Nimis exists on no formal map. Nimis is the driftwood sculpture within a Skåne reserve made by Lars Vilks. Declared illegal, its removal was ordered by Swedish government, to whom Vilks responded with the declaration of the micronation of Ladonia. You knew that the yellow Ns painted on trees marked the route to Nimis. What you didn’t know was that each milestone would mislead; you were relieved to see a sign saying 1.5 kilometers but, after walking for ten minutes, frustrated to find that the next announced still 1.3. But you persevered along the rocky path, pushing aside brushwood, until finally the sculptures rose up from the shore and into your sight. With only the sound of the cool waves and your settling breath, you sit by the sea. Lone inhabitant of your own nation.
