Finding Your Way to What's Funky in Midtown Sacramento, California

Move over downtown and Old Town Sacramento—midtown is where it's at. The artistic and cultural nucleus of the capital, midtown Sacramento, also known as the Grid, consists of numerous lively blocks east of downtown—an area roughly from 16th to 24th and J Street to Capitol Avenue. Tree-lined residential streets are quaint and charming, with old Victorian homes converted into small businesses like hair salons and thrift shops. Restaurants, cafes, and bars are scattered throughout, like Zocalo, a Mexican-American eatery, Old Soul Co., a warehouse-turned-bakery, and Badlands, a club where peeps flock to get their groove on. This nook of the city offers alternatives to the clean-cut, traditional landmarks on the tourist path (think the State Capitol Building). Here, visitors stroll and stumble upon eclectic antique shops and neighborhood art galleries.

If you could take just one photo: The historic buildings

Forget what you've heard. Sacramento is no longer that place to pull over and go to the bathroom on the way to Tahoe. Drive into Midtown, the oldest section of the city and discover, the grid: a mix of urban style independent stores, restaurants and drinking establishments housed in beautifully preserved turn of the century buildings. Walk down J st.and stop in at the popular, Tapas the World Spanish cuisine restaurant, or enjoy a cocktail and hooka with friends next door at the Kasbah Lounge. You can shop for used and vintage clothes a few blocks away on 21st. at Freestyle Clothing Exchange, then pop down the block to Time Tested Books. If drinking is on your agenda, Midtown hosts a diverse range of bars from neighborhood joint, The Golden Bear, to the late night speakeasy style of The Shady Lady. With it's rich history, architecture, and eclectic style,If you think you know Sacramento, think again, Midtown has truly become the next, yet to be discovered pocket for living and entertainment.
