Slurping Barbecued Oysters in Marshall, California

Oysters flourish in Tomales Bay’s pristine waters. The most famous places, like Hog Island Oyster Co., get packed on weekends. A better bet: the Marshall Store. It’s basically a deli, but it makes some of the best damn barbecued oysters you may ever taste. The chowder is redolent with thyme and dense with tender clams, never overcooked. After a chilly day on the water, it’s the perfect warm-up. And the store is only 100 yards down the road from Blue Waters. Snag a table on the waterview deck and watch the masts of sailboats bobbing in the sky.

  • Adam Rugel (Editor) thanks!

  • Tory Braden What I like is that you incorporated the harbor into the photo, emphasizing the sea food and from where it came. Must remember this trick with food presentation as it gives the viewer so much more than just a plate of food which really could come from anywhere.

If you could take just one photo: Marshall Store

Nothing, and I mean nothing beats a sunny day in Tomales Bay. Sitting out on the wooden deck, soaking in the sun and waterfront views at The Marshall Store is only the beginning. This place elevates the humble oyster to epic proportions with its Oyster Rockefeller. They take a just-shucked, juicy oyster and then magically place a blanket of spinach, breadcrumbs, cheese, garlic, and the right amount of butter, to turn this into pure bliss in one's mouth. If this is not your thing, their ceviche sings with a perfect balance of acid, and please don't forget a few local beers to wash it all down. Make sure to sit and stay awhile, because sunsets are not to be missed!

Marshall Store

When you visit The Marshall Store, you'll eat outside in the cool Tomales Bay breeze overlooking sleepy anchored fishing boats. The eatery (which looks like a total dive) is located on highway one, 15 minutes north of Point Reyes Station, right on the water's edge. After parking along the dusty side of the road, you'll walk on top of thousands of discarded shells as you make your way to the shack where you order food. You simply have to order the barbecued oysters, as they are the best you'll ever find. Drenched in garlic butter with a dollop of mildly spicy sauce and delivered with toasted french bread, you'll find yourself literally drinking all of the juices from the shells if you didn't manage to sponge it all up with the bread. I take my family here any month that has an "r" in it, as these are supposedly the best months to eat fresh oysters.
