Living Healthily Amidst Regenerated Tropical Rainforest in Sri Lanka
Before legal safeguards and community consciences were raised, the rainforests of Sri Lanka suffered. Of the original 250,000 wooded acres in the wet tropical south of the island, the 27,000 of Sinharaja are the biggest surviving chunk. But smaller splinters also exist, some reclaimed by green-leaning entrepreneurs. One plot, called Mahausakande, actually helped pioneer rainforest regeneration in the country. After 10 years of conservation on a neglected rubber plantation, endemic forest now fills Mahausakande’s 40 acres, which double as a basic but comfortable ecotourist retreat focusing on holistic and healthy living. Marked trails put you in touch with nature, while a simple dormitory promises shelter from it. Community education and outreach—especially to youth and women—are part of the package.
