Listening to Crashing Waves From Your Tent in Big Sur, California
As the sun hangs low over the Pacific Ocean, you end an afternoon drive along the Pacific Coast Highway and pull into Kirk Creek Campground, where many of the campsites look out from a 100-foot cliff over the Big Sur coast. Enjoy the sunset and a campfire (after stashing your food away from your aggressive raccoon neighbors). Wake to the soft crashing of the waves below, and gaze out your tent past yellow wildflowers at the deep blue expanse beyond. Will you take the steep trail past zipping swallows to the beach at low tide? Or will you cross Highway One and climb past woodpeckers and waterfalls through the Ventana Wilderness? You can do both, and still be back at your tent, nestled above the waves, for another spectacular sunset.
