Roaming Around a Traditional Hawaiian Village in Wailua, Kauai

Just a short distance away from the Opaeka’a Falls, Kamokila Hawaiian Village provides the explorer who wishes to leave no stone unturned the opportunity to wander the grounds of a well-preserved Hawaiian village. Its authenticity comes from the fact that it was once the location of a real village and the restored thatched-roof structures weren’t just placed there for the sake of tourist revenue. (Nevermind that it was also used in the Hollywood film, Outbreak in 1995.) Walk into the Hale Mua (men’s eating house) where you can see how men dined separately from women prior to modernization. A quick look into the Hale Pe’a (menstrual house) reveals the type of handicrafts woven by women while on their monthly. Be sure to follow the ground map. Along the perimeter are petroglyphs as well as very sacred sites.
