Riding the Ferry from Kadıköy to Eminönü in Istanbul, Turkey
Approaching the long, white and yellow ferry, the crowd shoves and rushes to get the best outdoor seats. Those lucky enough to reach it can sit among the fresh sea breeze mingled with the smoke of fifty cigarettes. The sounds of the engines and waves are combined with the chatter of Turks on their omnipresent cell phones. The twenty-minute journey isn’t complete without some simit (a sesame seed bread shaped like a bagel) and strong Turkish tea with sugar that will set you back just less than $1.00. The red crescent flag flutters as the Haghia Sophia and Blue Mosque grow ever closer on the unbelievably blue waters of the Bosphorus.
