Time-Traveling to the 1970s at Japantown in San Francisco
Japantown in San Francisco is more than 100 years old and it is certainly an important part of the city's history, but the centerpiece of what remains is an oddball indoor mall. Odd because it looks and feels like a 70s-era, film-set version of an American Japantown — from the mock-traditional arch bridges that join together sections of the indoor mall, to the dated Isobune Sushi with its wooden boats that tug the fish around, to the open-air Benihana where over-the-top chefs still make cheesy magic with their culinary special effects. There are several Tokyo-style hipster shops where you can make your own stickers and shop for unique collectibles, and a couple of excellent noodle joints worth seeking out. But the best reason to go is the time travel. Plans are in place to modernize the complex, so make sure to visit before it all changes.
