Chilling With Locals in Point Reyes National Seashore, California
It's a bit of a drive out to the Pierce Point Ranch, but there's a reason for that. Elk just aren't city animals. The lush grasses and rolling hills better support their country lifestyle. They need the open skies to swallow up the challenging bugles of the males, the ocean and cliffs to witness their combat over the harems, the wildflowers to calm their souls. This is wildlife viewing made as easy or as tough as you want it. Chances are you will see several herds of varying size, just on the drive to the parking lot. Get out and hike the seven miles roundtrip to Tomales Point (or shorter versions) and you will see so much more. Remember to respect the elk and keep your distance, for everyone's safety.
