Scaling the Heights at Hell’s Gate National Park in Kenya

Set in the arid volcanic hills near Lake Naivasha, Hell’s Gate National Park gets its ominous name from the geothermal steam vents that proliferate in the wide gorge that encompasses much of the park’s area. One of the few game parks in Kenya to allow hiking, Hell’s Gate offers the rare chance to walk amongst zebra, impala, giraffe, and other wildlife. Additional points of interest include numerous hot springs and the obsidian caves. The park is also a destination favored by rock climbers. Both Fischer’s Tower—a 75-foot volcanic plug near the main gate—and the gorge walls themselves provide popular routes for intermediate to advanced climbers.
