Letting Your Imagination Run Wild in Hell in West Bay, Grand Cayman

In Grand Cayman, Dante's Inferno comes to life in the form of jagged, black limestone formations that rise from dark, still waters. This creepy but artful landscape, which you cannot trek on but instead view from platforms, deserves its name: many of the rocks, some resembling stalagmites, are sharp and menacing. The entire site looks like the ruins of a Gaudi masterpiece (think the Sagrada Familia in fragments)—or the geological beginnings of a cavernous, deadly lair. Whatever you envision, Hell—as the locals proudly call it—is undoubtedly macabre, as is the small, old white house adjacent to it that doubles as a souvenir shop.

Editor's Note: Princess Cruises invited Cheri Lucas on an all-expenses Caribbean cruise with #followmeatsea. We asked her to veer off-the-beaten path and behind the scenes to see what she could find.

If you could take just one photo: Hell

Good and bad, right and wrong, yin and yang, naughty and nice, they all go hand in hand; Eden and Hell do too, and in The Grand Cayman Island you can definitely find a Paradise in Hell. What the locals refer to as “Hell” is a limestone formation in the town of West Bay. The origins of the name are unknown but it is said that if a pebble is thrown into the formation it echoes throughout the peaks and valleys as if it was falling down to Hell. Wether by air or by sea, people from around the world “go to Hell”. Its post office is constantly flowing with people sending postcards and messages postmarked “From Hell”. This is the only place where "going to Hell" is a good thing.

Hell

The small town of West Bay on Grand Cayman is home to limestone formations, which are reminiscent of volcanic rock and believed to be about 1.5 million years old. Over the years, the originally white limestone has been blackened by algae, causing the rock to erode into these unusual shapes seen today. Various versions exist as to how Hell got its name, but many people believe this is what Hell must really look like. On your visit, stop by the gift shop and post office for a photo op with Satan himself! While you are there, send your friends and family a postcard with the postmark proving you really have been to Hell and back!
