Sampling the Saimin at Hamura's in Lihue, Kauai

While saimin isn’t for all tastebuds, the locals swear by it and, if you’re like most and are curious to feast on the local fare, you’ll find yourself at Hamura’s Saimin on Kress Street. The restaurant is as casual as they come with counter-top tables and rather small stools for seating. Prepare to make a new friend as they’ll seat you wherever space is available and the place gets packed. Saimin, a ramen-style noodle dish (in broth) with a slightly uncertain origin, comes in a couple different sizes with a few variations. Try the Special Saimin, which is said to have the most flavors. Tasty, but not overdone, it’s the dining experience inside the restaurant that is most appetizing.
