Riding the Swells in a Kayak on the Na Pali Coast in Kauai, Hawaii
It seems easy at first, launching your kayak into the small waves from Ha'ena Beach Park, on the Island of Kauai's northern coast. But as you start paddling counter-clockwise to the Na Pali coastline's 17-mile long cliffs, the ocean breezes, swells, and currents all come alive. Waves bounce off the razor-sharp, rock-garden walls like rings in a bathtub, causing your watercraft to pitch and turn every which way but straight on course. Your fleet of other kayakers get lost between the increasing swells, and you suppress the urge to panic. Muscles and fingers start to cramp up, and it's hard to stop and take photos of the green, fin-shaped canyon walls. All this, and you're having the time of your life.
