Kayaking in Dense Fog in Grand Manan Island
Grand Manan Island sits in the Bay of Fundy, closer to Maine than Canada, in the steady back and forth of the largest tides in the world. For much of the time, Grand Manan is immersed in heavy fog, and must warn passing ships of the craggy coastline. Buoy bells and lighthouse blasts become a part of the background noise, but we found out just how valuable they are when we were kayaking and the blanket of fog fell over us. Although, from sound of the foghorn, we knew we were very close to the shore, but we couldn't see it. The fog shifted a bit and we discovered our kayaks were within ten feet of the base of a lighthouse.
