Lazing Around the End of the World at Golden Beach, Cyprus

If you can make it out there, the most spectacular beach in northern Cyprus is virtually at the tip of the eastern Karpaz Peninsula, the handle to the so-called "Cyprus Ladle." Known as Golden Beach (although the official name is Nangomi), it’s a beautiful, lonely stretch of pristine orange-brown sand that arcs along the coastline for about five kilometres. The beach is speckled with dark green bushes, and flanked to the north by scrubby dunes. Somewhat at odds with its desolate location, the drop-off is shallow, and the waves roll in gently, licking the shore. The tip of the peninsula is a protected area, and skittish, furry-eared wild donkeys roam freely. The beach is also a nesting ground for sea turtles — both green and loggerhead — so you might be kicked off after sunset during summer.
