Sampling the Local Flavor at the Fruit Market in Split, Croatia
The heat is oppressive as we navigate the narrow, labyrinthine marble streets of Split, blindingly white in the midday sun. A light sea breeze greets us as we pop out onto a harbor-side street. A small army of blue umbrellas is just past us and we catch a glimpse of bright greens, pinks and oranges. A closer look reveals a beautiful, enticing fresh fruit market. Golden olive oil beckons to us from glass containers. Half-cut watermelons and peaches are enough to make the weary, overheated traveler’s mouth water in anticipation. The price for this slice of nirvana is only five Croatian kuna.
