Watching a River Disappear into the Škocjan Caves in Slovenia
The Reka river rushes through a gorge, dead-ends, vanishes into the ground, courses through caves and underground canyons only to disappear through a siphon and pop up many miles away near the Adriatic sea. Is it any wonder that for millennia humans have viewed this as a place of pilgrimage and perhaps an entry point to the underworld? From a geological perspective the strange phenomena can be attributed to the persistent power of water, which has worn away and penetrated the porous limestone for millions of years. Visitors to the Škocjan Caves—one of just a handful of caves designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites—can follow the Reka, walking miles into the earth clinging to the side of an underground canyon with the water rushing below.
