Escaping New York for a Wilderness Weekend in Harriman State Park
New York City dwellers jonesing for a nature buzz can get their kicks with a day hike or overnight trip through New York's Harriman State Park in Rockland and Orange Counties. It's less than an hour from midtown and the best part is you don't even need a car to get there. Load up your knapsack with lunch for a day hike, or your backpack with gear for a one- to three-night trip, and blaze a trail to New York Penn Station. Hop a New Jersey Transit train to Secaucus Junction and transfer to Metro-North's West of Hudson line. Hop off at Suffern, Sloatsburg, Tuxedo, or Harriman, walk to a nearby trailhead and disappear into nearly 47,000 acres of lush, mountainous, old-growth forest featuring lakes, rustic camping, and stunning views. Be sure to take a good trail map so you know where you're going and how to get back.
