Embarking on an Ethical Elephant Trek in Hongsa, Laos
Perched atop your very own pachyderm, you'll ramble through the forests and rice paddies, skirt riverbanks, and even plod right through the middle of the river. The mahout (elephant expert extraordinaire) will teach you to groom, feed, and, best of all, bathe your noble friend. Elephant Adventures 4 or 5-day treks pass through pristine forest, provide a healthy environment for the elephants—many of whom spent their younger years as muscle for the logging industry—and have the lofty goal of creating a local economy that favors conservation and makes unsustainable logging less attractive than ecotourism. 5% of all the proceeds go to Elephantasia, an organization that rehabilitates and cares for domesticated and wild elephants and advocates for the future of Southeast Asia's most sacred creature.
