Slipping In Amidst the Reflections in Drake's Estero, California
Steep cliffs and towering bluffs rise up from the boulder-strewn shore. A gentle swell passes through the narrow mouth of Drake's Estero, smoothly lifting the kayak for a view of the incoming breakers as they crash against the protective sand spits. I paddle on through the one-hundred-yard stretch of ocean, before returning to the protected waters where the kelp wave gently with the currents, and the harbor seals trail behind. I see bat rays flying slowly through the crystal reflections, as leopard sharks dart amongst them. Birds without number dot the waters and shores, occasionally being scattered by a peregrine falcon. The pulsing of the currents and the fecundity of the estero seem to place it even more firmly at the pulsing, vibrant heart of the Point Reyes National Seashore than its mere geographical location would suggest. Grab some fresh oysters from the Drake's Bay Oyster Company as you leave. (They share the parking lot you left your car in.)
