#5174 Helping Monkeys Cross the Road at Diani Beach in Kenya

As you drive along the main road that serves Diani Beach, Kenya’s best-known stretch of seaside resorts, you’ll notice an odd sight. Every few hundred meters, a sort of horizontal rope ladder stretches from one tree or pole to another across the highway. These lifelines—known as “colobridges”—have been strung up by The Colobus Trust, a small organization determined to preserve the primate populations in this increasingly developed area. The remaining pockets of coastal forest support troops of vervet monkeys, baboons, Sykes monkeys (pictured), bushbabies, and the endangered Angolan black-and-white colobus. The trust works to reduce traffic incidents (thus the bridges), insulate high-voltage electrical lines, and de-snare local forests.
