Swimming in a Caldera in Deception Bay, Antarctica
One of the highlights of a cruise to Antarctica can be (for the very adventurous) swimming in the waters of the seventh continent. Whalers Bay boasts a very small area of hot water from geothermal activity near the shore; just a few meters out, the water is icy cold. Bathers take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to swim in the Southern Ocean, under the watchful eye of several (blanket-laden) crew members. The reward? The claim to perhaps have been swimming on all seven continents, a special certificate, a bottle of (chilled) champagne, and an unforgettable photo op. Even for those who choose to abstain, it is a plunge to remember.
