Fulfilling Promises With Mud and Wood in Debre Markos, Ethiopia
For some, the mud chika embodies all things therapeutic, spiritual, and strengthening. Cool to the touch, but messy to handle, it goes through a process of being mixed, tossed, splattered, slathered, and smoothed around the frame of felled wood. On Global Village projects across Ethiopia, volunteers work in partnership with poverty-stricken families residing under leaky roofs, in cramped spaces and unsanitary shelter to remedy the crisis. For the family members, the improved mud house topped by a shiny silver sheet of corrugated tin marks the start of a brighter future. For the volunteer, it’s proof that a distant East African village can feel a lot like home when building community.
