Listening to Nature's (Raucous) Call in Point Reyes, California
Imagine listening to a troop of howler monkeys (the screams, the yowls, the yelps.) Next, imagine a slumber party of eight-year-old boys (the farting, the burping, the screams and yelps.) Mix these noises with a deep, odd, reverberating sound of water being sploshed about. In other words an incredible cacophony of bizarre noises. Finally, picture yourself surrounded by green rolling hills bordered by the white cliffs of Drake's Bay on one side, and the mighty Pacific on the other. Now, open your eyes and listen to what's going on around you. If nothing has changed, chances are you are out at Chimney Rock in the Point Reyes National Seashore, and it is elephant seal pupping and mating season (December through March.) Head down the path to the overlook, and enjoy the show.
